Read it and eat
Finicky about filet mignon? Mad about mahi? Picky about poke? Longtime island food writer Joan Namkoong can advise you on where to go. Her new book, Food Lover’s Guide to Honolulu, has just been released by Bess Press. The comprehensive guide includes locations, hours of operation, phone numbers and even parking tips for Honolulu’s best places to grind. The 192-page paperback covers everything from hole-in-the-wall eateries to fine dining and all the cafes and eateries in between. Namkoong says her aim was to feature ‘the best food available from locally owned businesses that perpetuate the food traditions of the islands.’ She also adds a glossary of food terms, information about farmers’ markets and specialty food shops and food adventures you can engage in: cooking classes, local food festivals, a Chinatown crawl and the Honolulu fish auction. Read at your own risk: Flipping through the color photos alone is enough to make your mouth water. Available at bookstores for $14.95.
Book signings by author Joan Namkoong are scheduled for: May 4, 12pm at Best Sellers; May 5, 7pm at Barnes and Noble, Kahala Mall; May 6, 7:30-9:30am at KCC Farmers Market, 11am at Borders Express, Kahala, 2pm at Borders, Ward Centre; May 7, 12pm at Native Books, Ward Warehouse, 2pm at Borders, Pearlridge Center, 4pm at Barnes and Noble, Ala Moana Center.
