Local citrus
Hawai’i’s locally grown citrus crop has been abundant and choice this year. You can find pomelos, Meyer lemons, Kona oranges, tangerines, limes, kumquats, and best of all, tangelos. The winter crop is winding down, but check out farmers, markets and Chinatown for all manner of juicy, sweet and sour goodness. Hard to believe in these times but in the 19th century, Hawai’i was an exporter of oranges to California.
Another local citrus factoid–the reason our Kona oranges are green? Our nights aren’t cold enough to produce bright orange oranges.
