Honolulu Weekly is a “newsprint magazine” printed by the web-offset method on a modified tabloid format. Its format is based on a five-column tabloid page on 16-inch newsprint. Our display columns are approximately 2 inches wide. The classified section is based on an eight-column format with narrower columns.
For best reproduction, advertising material should be submitted as a PDF, see specifications below. Desktop laser proofs are not acceptable for quality reproduction.
The preferred method for submitting camera-ready ads is as a PDF. Ads may also be submitted in TIFF, JPEG, or Photoshop PSD formats. Ads submitted in EPS or AI formats will be accepted, but we cannot be responsible for reproduction problems with these formats. Materials submitted in other formats (Microsoft Word, Publisher, Powerpoint, Paint, CorelDraw, etc.) will not be accepted.
• For best results build your ad to the exact ad dimensions. Resolution: 300 dpi for grayscale or color formats; 600dpi for line art. We cannot be responsible for the quality of ads submitted in lower resolutions.
• When using PDF format fonts need to be embedded into the file or outlined for best results. Fonts not embedded in the file may be substituted with system default fonts. Due to the nature of PDF files we are usually not aware of substitutions when they take place.
• If using other file formats fonts should be rasterized or outlined.
• All images and graphics should be in grayscale or CMYK (4-color) formats. The quality of ads submitted in other formats cannot be guaranteed as a result of converting to grayscale or CMYK.
• Compressed files can be sent via email as .zip. We do not have a public FTP site for ad delivery.
• We reserve the right to add a border to ads that are not already bordered or that do not have a fill color. When creating a border for your ad ensure the border is specified as being “inline” so that it fits inside the dimensions of the ad. Most programs default to “Align to outside” or “Align to center”. Please change this value to “Align to inside”, otherwise your border will either disappear or be thinned.
