Films of the fall

Pump up the Volume
Interisland Terminal (see page 6) and Consolidated Theaters crank it up a notch this weekend with Turn It Up To 11, a three-day celebration of Rock ’n‘ Roll in cinema. You won’t catch Christian Slater manning the boards, but you can relive your NightFlight days with Ladies & Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains, a pre-MTV, proto-punk feature starring a young Diane Lane and a rash of early 1980s rock heros. Another highlight: We Are Wizards, Josh Koury’s 2008 doc exploring the Harry Potter-era phenomenon of “wizard rock.”
Show-nuff
Showdown in Chinatown is always a treat, and this month promises greatness–the organizers, in partnership with HIFF, are participating in The Chinatown Film Project. With origins in New York, the project is about documenting and celebrating Chinatown, as it appears in cities around the United States. Instead of the usual one-week project, this month’s Showdown project gave filmmakers a full month to create work about Honolulu’s Chinatown. The four finalists emerging from the 9/19 event will be screened in the streets of Chinatown on 10/23.
HIFF of excellence
The Hawaii International Film Festival marks 29 years next month with 10 days of cinematic excellence, including Anne Misawa’s much-anticipated statehood documentary.
