Second Saturday at the Garden
OAHU URBAN GARDEN CENTER / Engage your green thumb without shelling out any of the green in your pocket by attending Second Saturdays at the Garden at the Oahu Urban Garden Center in Pearl City. The Urban Garden Center is a 30-acre public garden operated by the UH-Manoa’s College of Tropical Agricultural and Human Resources. With the largest collections of turf grasses, hedges and citrus, the Urban Garden Center lets people see a flourishing garden in an urban setting. Second Saturday at the Garden is an opportunity for the public to learn from Oahu Master Gardeners, volunteers who trained in environmentally friendly tropical gardening practices at the University of Hawaii. Jayme Grzebik, the master gardener coordinator and an urban horticulturalist, says, “Just by strolling the grounds, visitors can not only learn about different plants for the home garden, but of various landscape design techniques, hardscapes, organic practices, trellising techniques.” According to Grzebik, since starting Second Saturday at the Garden, the Urban Garden Center has received an average of 300 visitors on those Saturdays. Visitor counts double during the summer months.
