Value of Production
Hawaii agriculture is worth more than $600 million per year. This chart shows the percentage each crop contributes to the total as of 2007. Pineapple production has since dropped precipitously.
Farmland is decreasing
Farmland has decreased from 35.1% of land in Hawaii in 1997 to 27.3% in 2007.
The changing heartland 2007 vs 1997
More farmers farming: There were more than 2,100 new farmers in 2007–up to 7,521 total.
Gender bender: The number of women farming nearly doubled: to 1,806, up from 922.
Getting older: The age of the average farmer was 59, up from 55.
Other jobs: 51% of farmers had no other job, down from 55% in 1997.
