Best Arts & Culture / Best Local Literary Blog
Tinfish Editor’s Blog
There are a few local literary blogs worth mentioning here. Hawaii Book Blog (soon to be “Hawaii Reads”), because of its comprehensive literary calendar and plethora of local lit reviews, and Literary Lotus because writer, Christine Thomas checks in on more than just literature, including travel, profiles, art, food and culture, and pretty much all things pertaining to the Pacific Rim.
But one blog stands out among the others. Tinfish Editor’s Blog, founded by TinFish Press editor and poet, Susan Schultz, digs in to literary “places” which most of us find…a bit uncomfortable.
Commenting on her work in Dementia Blog, Schultz writes:
“Because I was an only child, and because I did not know family outside my parents until much later in my life, and because my mother’s friends fell away during her long illness, there is no one with whom to share stories about her. It’s an odd chamber, this. No one to sit around a big table talking Martha with…To start now seems impertinent; no one wants to hear them out, because they no longer signify her, but her death. Discomfort attends death, and death blocks memory’s passages, even when the stories were damn funny.”
This isn’t even a jumping-off point when describing Schultz’s blog. Go there. She’ll make you laugh. She’ll make you angry. She’ll inspire the writer in you. —
